Irish Food and Health Research Alliance

Fourth Level Sector in Food and Health

Coordinator: Professor Mike Gibney at UCD - mike.gibney@ucd.ie

Background

The Irish government’s Strategy for Science Technology and Innovation envisages a very significant growth in the number of PhD students in Ireland. This is evident from the graph below. IFHRA plans to complement this growth in PhD studentships.

Planned Activities

IFHRA intends to focus on the development of the 4th level sector in three ways.

Area 1

We will further develop the National Graduate Training Programme in Food and Health. This programme provides PhD students with a broad training in many subject areas.

Area 2

We will conduct an audit on the existing levels and trends of PhD numbers in the IFHRA partners.

Area 3

We will develop a strategy for the recruitment of new PhD students from the newer states of the EU and outside the EU possibly. We will do this through the development of strategy partnerships with other universities.
